Billie Holiday

Eleanora Fagan Gough, known as Billie Holiday, was born in Philadelphia, April
7, 1915. She was an American Jazz singer. She is considered one of the most influential
female voices in jazz. Holiday was an orphan and had a difficult childhood. She
recorded her first album with only 18 years old, it was “Your Mother’s son In-Law”,
after being discovered her extraordinary vocal qualities by John Hammond. This was a
time of great success, and his fame and success grew. Billie also recorded other
recordings of success as “God Bless the child”, “I love you Porgy” and “Fine and
mellow”, but her most famous recording was “Strange Fruit”. This song is about the
lynching of black people, and this fruit represents the hanged black people, who were
battered and murdered by southern people in the USA.
Unfortunately Holiday entered in the world of drugs, which caused his death in
1959.
